Minimalist Baby Registry: Must-Have Essentials for New Parents

Creating a baby registry can be overwhelming, especially with all the must-have lists out there telling you that you need everything from wipe warmers to specialized baby loungers. But the truth is, you really don’t need all that stuff to raise a happy, healthy baby. A minimalist baby registry is about focusing on the essentials and avoiding clutter that will just take up space in your home. Babies don’t need a house full of things—just the basics, lots of love, and some cleverly chosen items that make life easier for both you and them. Let’s simplify things and build a baby registry with only what truly matters. This list below is the actual items I got and recommend.

1. Sleep Essentials

Your baby will spend a lot of time sleeping, so setting up a simple, safe sleep space is key.

• Crib and Bassinet: A safe sleep space that meets current safety standards is a must. Some parents opt for a bedside bassinet for the early months.
• Firm Mattress & Fitted Sheets: Skip the bumpers, pillows, and blankets—just a breathable mattress with fitted sheets is all you need.
• Sleep Sacks or Swaddles: Instead of loose blankets, which can be a safety hazard, sleep sacks or swaddles help keep baby cozy.
• White Noise Machine: Helps soothe your baby and drown out household noise, but not a necessity.

2. Feeding Essentials

Whether you plan to breastfeed, formula-feed, or both, here are the true must-haves, along with a few essentials for when your baby starts eating solids.

• Bottles & Nipples: Even if breastfeeding, it’s helpful to have a couple of bottles on hand for pumped milk or formula.
• Breast Pump (if breastfeeding): A simple manual or electric pump can be useful if you need to express milk.
• Burp Cloths: Soft, absorbent cloths to clean up inevitable spit-ups.
• High Chair (for later months): A simple, easy-to-clean high chair when baby starts solids. I got the simple IKEA high chair and added accessories like a chair pad and foot rest.
• Plates & Bowls: Small, unbreakable plates and bowls designed for babies learning to eat.
• Sippy Cups or Open Cups: Trainer cups to help transition from bottles.
• Baby Utensils: Soft-tipped spoons and forks for little hands.

3. Diapering Essentials

Babies go through a lot of diapers, but you don’t need all the fancy extras.

• Diapers: There are a lot of options out there but we decided to go with Hello Bello brand.
• Wipes: Fragrance-free wipes also from Hello Bello is what we picked.
• Diaper Cream: To prevent and treat diaper rash.
• Changing Pad: A simple changing pad can be placed on a dresser or the floor—no need for a bulky changing table. We decided to go with a basket type changing pad.

4. Clothing Essentials

Babies outgrow clothes quickly, so keeping it simple is best.

• Onesies & Footed Sleepers: A handful of comfortable, easy-to-change outfits.
• Socks & Hats: A few pairs of socks and a hat for warmth.
